Brian W. Keelan

There is no single, universally recognized authority for taxonomy of mammals within the ABA area, analogous to the AOU for birds in North America. So the construction of a checklist of mammals of the ABA area requires a somewhat arbitrary decision. I have chosen to use the 2009 edition of the Princeton Guide . Its taxonomy is based on Wilson and Reeder , a 2005 two-volume set on mammals of the world, but the Princeton guide also includes updates based on more recent publications. It appears to be the most up to date single work available, from which a checklist could be constructed.

Another excellent field book, from just a few years earlier, is the Kaufman Guide . Anyone with even the sightest interest in mammals should own both the Princeton and Kaufman guides. Mention should also be made of the Revised Checklist of North Americal Mammals North of Mexico, 2003 , which is available free, at the link given, and is very readable and interesting. I have adopted its classification at the levels of family and order, as the field guides do not give a complete classification at this level. There is still debate regarding the higher classification of mammals; as a large committee authored the 2003 checklist, the approach is likely to be a moderate one.

If you'd like more information on a species than is found in the field guides, the best on-line source I have found are the Mammalian Species Accounts published by the American Society of Mammalogists. In the linked page, click on "PDFs", which will produce a listing in order of publication. Although this is hardly convenient, control-F will give a search field in most browsers, allowing rapid location of the species in question.

The Princeton Guide includes 444 native mammals of the ABA area, as well as 15 non-native species. As in the case of birds, deciding which introduced species to include in a checklist is difficult. There is no body like the ABA providing listing guidance. I am solving this problem by simply excluding non-natives.

The arrangement of the checklist is as follows: the 10 Latinized orders are farthest left, with number of species given in square brackets. Scientific, rather than common names, are used for the orders because the latter are awkward at this level; there are so few to learn; and they often provide convenient monikers in the field (e.g., "lagomorphs" for anything resembling a rabbit). The 41 families are indented once, with members again in []. Species are indented twice. The checklist is preceded by a list of orders and families only; this allows a more convenient overview of the higher taxonomic levels.
